A piggyback fuel controller system alters the signal after it has already been sent from the ECU to the fuel injectors. A piggyback controller then requires a harness installation, piggybacking onto the fuel injector connector, in order to alter these signals. This is then a hardware solution which ONLY modifies the fueling and nothing else. As the ECU does not know that the fuel values have been changed by the piggyback controller it is unable to compensate for other effects that this might have on other maps such as requested torque, etc.
Tuning your ECU reprograms the maps and settings at the source level inside the ECU, this provides a much larger feature set and finer control over the programming inside the ECU. Writing a complete tune to your ECU then provides much greater flexibility, performance and ultimately power to tune your bike to the limit when compared with piggyback controllers.
Yes, writing to your ECU does also come with greater responsibility to ensure that it is written properly and reasonable map changes are made but all tuners are aware of this already.
