Kawasaki Deceleraton Fuel Cut


Most modern vehicles with internal combustion engines stop injecting fuel into the cylinders while the vehicle is decelerating with the throttle closed, this helps to improve the vehicle emissions by reducing the amount of unburned fuel released from the exhaust.
The Woolich Racing Tuned software provides an option to disable the Deceleration Fuel Cut for several Kawasaki models e.g. ZX-10R, the information in this article will be relevant if this is combined with the use of a Quickshifter/Autoblipper.

When the stock deceleration fuel cut is disabled there will still be fuel delivered during deceleration. An Autoblipper opens the ETV and injects fuel to increase engine RPM during downshifting for a short period of time. This allows the engine to match the higher engine RPM of the lower gear. This additional fuel combined with the extra fuel delivered by disabling the Deceleration Fuel Cut can cause too much fuel to be delivered and therefore too much engine RPM increase during downshifting, resulting in the bike lurching forward. This can be unpleasant for the rider.

If you want to leave the deceleration fuel cut disabled on Kawasaki models, then you need to make significant reductions to the deceleration region of the IAP fuel maps to reduce this lurching during downshifting with an Autoblipper. The image below provides a good guide of where to make the reductions in fuelling.

Note that on bikes which have both IAP as well as TPS fuel maps, the IAP fuel map is used for low throttle positions (ie. < 10% throttle) which typically applies during deceleration.  Changes to fuelling should then be made primarily to the IAP fuel map in order to reduce lurching during deceleration/downshifting on these bikes in the deceleration region as shown below.  

We have also found some differences between models from various years as follows:

  • 2016-2018 ZX-10R - we have been able to get it smooth by just using the IAP map strategy.
  • 2019-2020 ZX-10R- these are in theory the same as above but have presented challenges on some bikes.
  • 2021+ ZX-10R - 'Other Maps' in WRT now includes 'Autoblipper Strength' map.  Reducing the Autoblipper Strength (minimum value is 1.0) improves the performance and should be combined with the IAP fuel reductions described above.
  • If none of the above tips gives the result you are looking for then re-enabling the Deceleration fuel cut is the final step
