 Reading an ECU with a v1 or v2 interface - includes instructions and Video Tutorial |
The Woolich Racing Tuned (WRT) software and associated hardware allows you to read/write to most motorcycle ECUs and thereby to modify the bike's tuning. The communication with the ECU uses the Woolich Racing Tuned software running on a PC or laptop as well as a communication interface such as a Log Box or USB interface. There have been several interfaces developed over the last years and at the time of writing the current version is v3.
This article shows how to use the legacy v1 and v2 interfaces to read an ECU so is NOT applicable to v3 interfaces. If you want to read an ECU with a v3 interface please see this article instead: The following steps are a description of how to read an ECU using the Woolich Racing Tuned software and a v1/v2 interface. Install Harness according to the Installation Instructions.

Connect the Interface to the harness.

Connect the Interface to the computer with the supplied USB cable. Please note that we recommend using a high-speed USB port.

Ensure Interface is in ECU flashing mode
- Switch in the right-hand position, red LED on
-
Open Woolich Racing Tuned software
-
Open the bin file definition for your model
- Click the "New" button then select the manufacturer, model, year and part number and click on "New"

Turn the bike ignition on, gear in Neutral, Kill Switch in the RUN position or turn the power supply on for bench flashing.

In the WRT software the "Tools"=>"Read ECU" menu item.

The WRT software will connect to the ECU and read the bin file from the ECU into memory.
N.B. If you are performing multiple flashes with a V1 & V2 Interface only, remember that you need to have cycled the interface into the center mode position then back to
flashing mode before attempting another write/read operation.

| Writing to an ECU with a v1 and v2 Interface |

There have been several interfaces developed over the last years and at the time of writing the current version is v3.

The following steps should be followed when writing to an ECU - Install Harness according to the Installation Instructions.
- Connect Interface to Harness
- Connect the Interface to the computer with the supplied USB cable. Please note that we recommend using a high-speed USB port.
- Ensure bike is in Neutral with Kill Switch in Run Position
- Turn Ignition off or 12V power supply off (when using bench harnesses)
- Put Interface switch into Center Position
- Open Woolich Racing Tuned software
- Turn on Ignition or 12V Power Supply (when using bench harness)
- The ECU should now be in flashing mode.
- Start writing to the ECU.

| Format Micro SD card - v1 & v2 Logbox |
If you are having difficulty with viewing and updating your Log Box, saving or viewing '*.wrl' log files it may be due to a problem with the Micro SD card, and formatting the Micro SD card may correct the problem.
Please not that this article is only valid for Log Box v1 and Log Box v2 interfaces.
Process to format the Micro SD card:
1. Put the Log Box into Data Logging mode (switch in the middle position).
2. Connect the Log Box to the computer via the USB cable, Do NOT connect to an ECU.
3. View the Log Box in Devices and Drives, if it does not appear then you will need to remove the Micro SD card and format it using an external USB card reader on the computer.
4. Right Click the Logbox and go to Format.
5. Perform a Quick Format with to a FAT32 file.
6. Click 'Start' and follow all on screen prompts and now the micro SD card has been reformatted. If you receive an error and are unable to format the card, please try inserting it into an external card reader instead, and attempt the format procedure again.

| Testing the Denso USB / Log Box v1 Interfaces |
Woolich Racing provides hardware and software solutions for writing tune files to the ECU, thereby modifying the vehicle performance. This all relies on our Woolich Racing Tuned software being able to communicate with the ECU via a Woolich Racing communication interface like the Log Box or USB. If there are problems with communication it is important to be able to quickly test the interface and its basic functions.
This guide explains how to test the USB Denso v1 and Log Box Denso v1 interfaces as shown below.
Please ensure that you have not modified the COM Port settings, you should use the default values for Baud rate etc in Device Manager.
To Test Flashing Mode 1. Ensure the interface is NOT plugged into an ECU. 2. Put a jumper wire from pin 3 to pin 7 on the interface. 
The plug pin out above is the 8-pin Molex socket on the interface. 
3. Connect the USB cable from the interface to the computer. 4. Move the mode switch on the interface to the right hand side position to the Read / Write mode (red LED on). 5. Open the Woolich Racing Tuned software, go to "Tools" then click on "Test Interface". 
Voltage Tests on Denso v1 interfaces ONLY Use a multimeter in a DC voltage setting to perform the following tests. 1. Connect the USB cable from the Interface to the computer. 2. Move the mode switch on the interface to the right hand side position to the Read / Write mode (Red LED on). 3. Measure the voltage between pin 4 and pin 8 on the interface, this should be 4.5-5V when in flashing mode (Red LED on). 4. Measure the voltage between pin 1 and pin 8 on the interface, this should be 4.5-5V when in flashing mode (Red LED on).
The plug pin out above is the 8-pin Molex socket on the interface
To Test Engine Data Mode Denso v1 Interfaces ONLY
1. Ensure the interface is NOT plugged into an ECU. 2. Connect the USB cable from the interface to the computer. 3. Ensure you have the interface powered with 12V DC Power Supply connected to pin 5 and Ground connected to pin 8 on the Molex plug of the interface. You can also use a Denso Bench Harness and use your Power Supply to power the interface. 4. Move the mode switch on the interface to Engine Data Mode (Orange LED on) 5. Open the Woolich Racing Tuned software, go to "Tools" then click on "Test Interface".

Connect the Interface with a 12V DC power supply either by the bike ignition with an on bike harnesses or with the 12V DC power supply using a bench harness connected to the 8-pin Molex connector. Ensure the interface is NOT plugged into an ECU.
5. Turn on the Power Supply.
6. Measure the voltage between pin 3 and pin 8 on the interface, this should be 11.5V - 13.5V when in flashing mode (Red LED on).
7 . Measure the voltage between pin 4 and pin 8 on the interface, this should be 14.0V - 16.0V when in flashing mode (Red LED on).

To Test Engine Data Mode Mitsubishi v1 Interface ONLY 1. Ensure the interface is NOT plugged into an ECU. 2. Connect the USB cable from the Interface to the computer. 3. | How do I install the COM Port drivers in the Woolich Racing Tuned (WRT) software? [Legacy v1 & v2 devices only] |
This article is only valid for legacy communication interfaces such as USB and Log Box v1 and v2. This does not apply to v3 communication interfaces such as USB v3 or Log Box v3.
Generally Windows will automatically recognize the Woolich Racing communication interfaces and install the appropriate COM port drivers automatically for you.
The following procedure is for cases where the drivers are not automatically installed.

Log into Windows as an Administrator
-
Open the Woolich Racing Tuned Software
-
From the 'Tools' menu choose 'Install COM Port Drivers’
-
A command window will open and install the FTDI COM Port Drivers
-
Reboot Windows when the command window has closed
-
Log into Windows as an Administrator
-
Plug your Woolich Racing Log Box or USB Interface into the USB Port on the PC
-
Windows should automatically detect the USB Serial Port and install and configure it
-
Open 'Device Manager' and expand the 'Ports (COM & LPT)' section to check that the USB Serial Port is available and configured
-
Take note of the COM port number that has been assigned to the USB Serial Port.
Note:
Some computers do not work well when the USB Serial Port in your interface is set to a COM Port number greater than 9. Click here to see a guide on how to change the COM Port Number.

| I have set up the COM Port, but it’s still not showing up in the ‘Settings’ form? [V1 and V2 devices ONLY] |
Wolich Racing communication interfaces are used to read/write to ECUs. Older generations of these interfaces (eg. v1 and v2 Log Box and USB interfaces) used a USB-COM port adapter which was configured in the software. This article applies specifically to these older interfaces and is not applicable to v3 interfaces..
If the COM Port is still not showing in the 'Settings' form within the Woolich Racing Tuned software you may need to re-install the USB COM Port driver.

Log into Windows as an Administrator

Open 'Device Manager' and locate the 'Ports (COM and LPT)' section
-
Plug the USB Interface or Log Box into the computer's USB port, make sure the mode switch is in Flashing Mode (red led on).

You should see the USB Serial Port appear in the list in 'Device Manager' under the 'Ports (COM and LPT)' section.

Right mouse click the 'USB Serial Port' and choose 'Uninstall' from the menu.
-
Ensure the 'Delete the driver software for this device' checkbox is checked.
-
Click the 'OK' button to finish uninstalling the driver.

Unplug the USB Interface or Log Box from the Computer
-
Reboot the computer
-
Log into Windows as an Administrator
-
Install and configure the COM Port drivers following the instructions from the previous post
Note: the USB Interface or Log Box needs to be plugged into the USB port on the computer and the mode switch needs to be in Flashing mode (red led
on) for the COM Port to appear in the Woolich Racing Tuned software settings form and in Windows Device Manager.

| How to Re-Install Firmware on v2 Interfaces |
If there is a problem with the Device Firmware Update or you need to reset the Device Firmware, follow the procedure detailed below. This procedure is for v2 Interfaces ONLY (i.e. Log Box v2 or USB v2). Please ensure that you have a strong and stable internet connection during the update process.
1. Unplug the device from the USB cable. 2. Ensure the switch is in the Read/Write position (switch moved to the right-hand side as shown below).
3. Plug the USB cable back into the Interface and computer.
5. Click on Re-Install Firmware.
6. Follow the on screen prompts to Reset the Device.
7. Once the device has been connected all 3 LED lights should be flashing.
8. Follow the on screen prompts to Reset Device. 9. Once completed you will directed back to the Device Configuration.

| Resetting Device Firmware on v2 Interfaces |
If there is a problem with the Device Firmware Update or you need to reset the Device Firmware, follow the procedure detailed below. This procedure is for v2 Interfaces ONLY (ie. Log Box v2 or USB v2) and forces the device into 'Bootloader Mode' allowing Firmware Installation. Please ensure that you have a strong and stable internet connection during the update process. - Unplug the device from the USB cable.
- Put the device into Bootloader mode by moving the mode switch to a position between "Read/Write" mode and "Data Logging" mode (ie. half-way between Read/Write and Data Logging positions as shown below).
- Plug the device back into the USB cable.
- When the device is in Bootloader mode all LED's will flash.
- Open the "Tools"=>"Device Configuration" screen in the WRT software
- You will be informed "Could not determine Device Type, please select the Device Type from the drop down list."
- Select the correct device from the drop down list and the "Device Firmware Update" process will begin and device will be updated with the latest firmware version.
- Once the device firmware has been updated, move the mode switch back into "Read/Write" mode.

| Unable to format micro SD card in Log Box or Log Box Pro? |
The Woolich Racing Log Box interfaces use a Micro SD memory card to save data during logging of engine data, etc. The log files written to the Micro SD card should be accessible to you using Windows File Explorer, if the Micro SD card is not visible in Windows it may be necessary to reformat the SD card.
If the Micro SD card in the Log Box is not visible in Windows Device Manager, Windows File Explorer, etc then it will not be possible to format the Micro SD card while it is inserted into the Log Box, in this case you will need an external Micro SD card reader to format the Micro SD card as follows: - Remove the Micro SD card from the Log Box/Log Box Pro
- Place Micro SD card into the external card reader connected to your PC
- The Micro SD card should appear in Windows as an external hard drive
- Right click on the Micro SD card in Windows and choose Format
- Select FAT32 under 'File System', and accept the other the default settings
- Click Format.
- Once formatting has completed you can remove the Micro SD card from your PC, and re-install it into the Log Box.
- The Micro SD card should now be visible in Windows File Explorer as an external drive and you should be able to view any log files saved on the card.

| What are COM Ports and why do I need them? |
COM ports allow your computer to connect to and communicate with the ECU in your bike. The Woolich Racing v1 and v2 interfaces (eg. Log Box v2, USB v1) come equipped with USB Serial COM Ports that make it easy to connect your computer to the ECU via USB. When the interface is connected to the PC with a USB cable, the computer detects a new COM port which the Woolich Racing Tuned software will then use to communicate with the interface and the ECU.

| How do I configure the Woolich Racing Tuned software to use the correct COM Port? |
COM ports (communication ports) allow your computer to connect to and communicate with the ECU in your bike. The Woolich Racing Tuned software used COM ports to 'talk' to the communication interface (eg. Log Box or USB) which then communicates with the ECU.
Woolich Racing communication interfaces (eg. Log Box or USB) have their own USB-Serial COM Ports that make it easy to connect your computer to the interface. You will normally not need to change the COM port configuration as it should work our of the box and recognise your communication interface automatically.
In case this does not work, please follow these steps to configure the Woolich Racing Tuned software to use the correct COM Port: - Open Woolich Racing Tuned software
- Click the 'Settings" button
- Choose the COM Port for your Woolich Racing Interface
- Click the OK button to save the Settings

| How do I uninstall a Device Driver in Windows [applicable to V1 and V2 devices] |
If you are having driver issues with your legacy V1 or V2 interface, please try following these steps: - Open "Devices and Printers"
- Locate "Woolich Racing USB"
- Right click on "Woolich Racing USB" and select Properties
 - Click the "Hardware" tab then select "Properties"
 - Click the "Driver" tab then select "Uninstall"
 - Follow the prompts to uninstall the device driver.

| My Interface says it's registered to another user |
Woolich Racing communication interfaces are used to allow the software running on the PC to 'talk' to the ECU. All communication interfaces (eg. USB, Log Box) are registered to only be used by the account that initially purchased them. If you try to use an interface that belongs to another account, or you have purchased a second hand interface, you will get an error saying "This device is registered to another user". You will not be able to use it until the device has been transferred to your own account, thereby making you the 'owner'.
To transfer the device, we must have permission from the current registered owner.
If you are in contact with the previous owner, please ask them to Open a Support Ticket, to let us know they have sold the hardware to you.
If you are not in contact with the previous owner or don't know who they are, we will need to contact them to seek permission to complete the transfer. We may ask you to connect the device to your PC, so we can find the owner.
We do not approve any transfer where we do not have permission from the registered owner.

Woolich Racing does not provide support for the EcuEditor software. EcuEditor is in maintenance mode. Woolich Racing Tuned has been redesigned from the ground up to allow for adding new makes and models, and is now the focus for all development.

Justin Woolich was a contributor to the development of the EcuEditor software, along with PetriK, JaSa from Finland. Justin is currently maintaining the software. No new features are planned for EcuEditor as the Woolich Racing Tuned software is now the primary focus of all development work. | Can I switch between EcuEditor and the WRT software? |
Yes you can switch between EcuEditor and Woolich Racing Tuned software (WRT). You will need to create the bin file using EcuEditor first, then you can open this bin file in both EcuEditor and WRT.
Note, this is only applicable for models supported in EcuEditor, no new makes and models will be added to EcuEditor.
